Disney is opening the doors to Crescent Veil just in time for Halloween, but Coven Academy is not arriving as another bright, tidy magic-school adventure. Its heroine is investigating her mother’s suspicious death, its vampires come with appetites they cannot always control, and its young witches are stepping into a conflict older than any of them.
The other surprise is the shape of the show itself. Creator Tim Federle has built the first season as 21 short, fast-moving “chapters” rather than a conventional run of hour-long episodes. The entire season lands on Disney+ and Hulu on October 2, 2026, one day after a nine-chapter premiere block on Freeform. Three teenage witches and their warlock peers become caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden relationships, forcing them to decide how much they will risk to protect their city and each other. Malachi Barton as Jake
Jake is a gifted warlock drawn toward dark magic and toward Briar. Barton, familiar to Disney viewers from Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, originally auditioned for Ollie. Federle instead saw him as a more compelling fit for Jake, a young man desperate for approval and a father figure. That need brings him close to Mr. Cole and makes his talent increasingly dangerous when he begins using darker spells.

Ollie is the apparent boy next door who picks Briar up at the airport. By the end of the opening chapter, viewers learn that he is a newly turned vampire who refuses to drink human blood. Thresher’s English background changed the character: Federle rewrote Ollie as an exchange student after the actor’s audition brought an edge the creator had not expected. Miss Graves is Crescent Veil’s polished, uncompromising head of school, a former student with a personal connection to Briar’s mother. Thiessen’s casting gives the series a neat generational bridge to the teen television of the 1990s. Devon Sawa provides another one as Mr. Cole, an admired warlock professor who is less impressed by raw talent than his students might hope. He becomes an important mentor to Jake, and official descriptions suggest that a surprising new student will disrupt the faculty’s plans.
The recurring cast includes Swayam Bhatia as school queen bee McKenna, Jake’s stepsister; Brendon Tremblay as vampire mentor Alexander; Keegan Connor Tracy as Ollie’s witch-hating aunt Tamora; BJ Harrison as immortal archivist Agnes; and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese, a grieving and intense vampire.
Why Coven Academy feels different from a standard Disney fantasy
Federle created Coven Academy after High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, but he has said the new project came from a very different set of touchstones: Dawson’s Creek, Practical Magic, The Craft, Charmed and Hocus Pocus, with boarding-school DNA from films including Dead Poets Society. Crucially, it is an original story rather than an adaptation. Federle told Teen Vogue that the lack of existing intellectual property freed him from audience expectations.
The pitch is darker without abandoning what he calls a “Disney heart.” The trailers promise blood, grief and romantic danger, but the underlying argument is optimistic: traits treated as deficits in ordinary life become sources of power once these teenagers find the right community. That idea is clearest in Tegan’s time-bending ability and Briar’s emotion-driven telekinesis.
The visual references were equally deliberate. Federle asked the cast and crew to study Cruella, Wednesday and Saltburn for a saturated, cinematic look. He also emphasized practical effects. Floating jars and the destruction of Miss Graves’ office were achieved largely on set, while vampire sequences were shot handheld to keep them immediate and avoid overly polished supernatural imagery.
