Despite the fact that our favourite Hollywood names will entertain us next year, a number of rising stars will make their mark on the entertainment landscape in 2023, and frankly, we can’t rave enough about them because they prove that the future of the industry is bright.
Whether it’s Halle Bailey in the Disney remake of The Little Mermaid, Kathryn Newton as the new IT girl , or Rosy McEwan on the verge of her big Hollywood break, the new talent is insane. Though we can’t keep track of every newcomer, we’ve narrowed it down to 17 rising stars who will make waves in 2023. Learn about their acting career so far, what you can see them in the next year, and how you can catch them !
Rosy McEwen
At the age of thirteen, Rosy McEwan made it to the final two for the role in 2007’s Atonement when a casting director visited her school. Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan won the role. Finally, Rosy has her chance to shine. A recent role in the drama Blue Jean earned her the Best Lead Performance award at the British Independent Film Awards, which undoubtedly cements her status as one to watch. The 1960s horror-thriller Apartment 7A will also feature Emmy-award winner Julia Garner.
Charmaine Bingwa
Charmaine Bingwa is set to earn Oscar buzz for her role as Dodienne in the action thriller, Emancipation, which also stars Will Smith. In her ten-year tenure as the first person of colour to be awarded Australia’s Heath Ledger Scholarship, what else can we expect from her ? In King Shaka , also executive produced by Antoine Fuqua, Bingwa plays Isisa, a fierce and formidable warrior. Charmaine is definitely heading for her big things again !
Naomi Ackie
Naomi Ackie will most certainly be on critics’ lips well into next year for her turn as Whitney Houston in the upcoming biographical film I Wanna Dance with Somebody . In 2023, the 30-year-old will also star in Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut Pussy Island and Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction flick Mickey7 .
Bella Ramsey
In 2023, British actress Bella Ramsey will be taking on the lead role in the post-apocalyptic HBO adaptation of the 2013 game The Last of Us. Ramsey is known for her roles in Game of Thrones and The Worst Witch. On 16th January 2023, Sky Atlantic and NOW will premiere the series and it won’t disappoint . Ramsey voices Hilda in the Netflix animated series as of 2018. There is no doubt that Bella is booked and busy, and we are delighted to see that .
Yasmin Finney
The Netflix series Heartstopper, starring Yasmin Finney as trans teenager Elle Argent, was her breakout this year. She spoke candidly about how important the role is to her, as a trans woman herself telling PinkNews and The Upcoming : “It really, really, really is such a rare story that we get a trans character that doesn’t delve into gender dysphoria, or depression, or bullying, but just the positive – the friendship, the chosen family, the moving from an all boys’ school to an all girls’ school .
Just everything that is natural about being trans is highlighted, and I’m just so happy to be that positive representation that we’ve needed for so many years.” In the upcoming 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, Yasmin will play Rose, the Doctor’s loyal companion.
Frankie Corio
To become a child star, you have to possess certain skills. With her portrayal of Sophie in the film AfterSun, which recently won Best British Independent Film Award, 12-year-old Frankie Corio is already making waves. There is no doubt that Frankie will soon have an onslaught of movie offers coming her way, so she is one to watch.
Tamara Lawrance
As a graduate of the famous acting school RADA in 2015, Tamara Lawrance has consistently risen to the top of her game with performances like Prince Harry’s republican girlfriend in King Charles III, as well as Viola in Twelfth Night on stage in 2017. In the near future, Tamara will be a major player in the real-life inspired movie The Silent Twins (for which she won Best Joint Performance at the British Independent Film Awards with Letitia Wright) and the new television miniseries Get Millie Black.
The Guardian listed her among ” 20 talents set to take 2017 by storm ” and WhatsOnStage named her one of “10 theatre faces to watch in 2017 ” .
Talia Ryder
In Never Rarely Sometimes Always , Talia Ryder played a young teenager accompanying her cousin for an abortion , and in Netflix’s Do Revenge, she played a super-cool high-schooler . For the twenty-year-old, things can only get better . Joika , Little Death and Dumb Money will all be released in 2023 , so rest assured you’ll be seeing her a lot !
Kathryn Newton
Kathryn Newton already had a great 2023 with her upcoming projects, but playing Reese Witherspoon’s daughter in Big Little Lies wasn’t enough for her. We’ll soon see her in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania with Paul Rudd .As far as her role in the movie is concerned, the 25-year-old said:
- “I’m not perfect, I’m impatient, and I want to be a hero, but I don’t really know what to do, and I think Cassie Lang is similar.”
She’s just trying to figure out how to be a good person and, you know, making a lot of mistakes . She’s kind of a mess, yeah, and so am I.” In addition, she will also be seen in the upcoming biopic Winner and the comedy Lisa Frankenstein.
Stephanie Hsu
A lot of critical acclaim has come Stephanie Hsu’s way thanks to her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once . She will soon star in a yet-to-be-titled Adele Lim film alongside Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park, which will be directed by NYU Tisch School of the Arts .
Streaming service Peacock will debut Stephanie’s upcoming series Poker Face on January 26 . She will also appear alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the star-studded action film, The Fall Guy, in 2024.
Halle Bailey
One of 2023’s most hotly anticipated films, The Little Mermaid, stars Halle Bailey, and we couldn’t be more excited for her! Her sister Chlöe Bailey and she form the musical duo Chloe x Halle, which has earned five Grammy nominations since 2018 . Speaking about injecting an “essence” of herself into the iconic Disney role, Halle told Entertainment Weekly : “My hair, for example — incorporating my locs into the red hair was something that was really special to me . The outfit, the fins, everything. It’s just amazing. I’m just grateful that I’ve been able to take the essence of me and mix the two.” While a film on such a scale may be just enough to handle during one year, we can also expect her to catch her in the musical period drama, The Color Purple alongside Fantasia and Taraji P. Henson.
At the 2020 NAACP Image Awards, she has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Skyler Forster in Grown-ish.
Hunter Schafer
In the HBO teen drama television series Euphoria (2019–present), she played transgender high school student Jules Vaughn, for which she was nominated for a Shorty Award, an MTV Movie & TV Award, and a Dorian Award.
- Teen Vogue named Schafer to its “21 Under 21” list in 2017 for her activism against HB2 .
It’s no secret that we love and admire Jules from HBO’s Euphoria, but she is truly set to have her own moment in the spotlight as the lead role in 2023’s Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Hunter can only follow in Jennifer Lawrence’s footsteps as he became a bonafide star in the original movies.
Jessica Henwick
As an actress, Jessica Henwick is well known for her roles in Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Matrix Resurrections. She will make a big impact in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, starring Daniel Craig and Kate Hudson. Cuckoo and The Royal Hotel are two other movies she’s working on next year . In a recent interview with GLAMOUR, Jessica spoke about feeling like an imposter despite her newfound success .
- During the last few years, Netflix has been incredibly supportive of me. I have had a great run. But you never lose that sense of: this is it, it’s going to end now. It’s going back to that imposter syndrome. I always feel like I’m treading water, just trying to get to the next pit stop.”
Nicola Peltz
With her glamorous wedding to Brooklyn Beckham, Nicola Peltz may have had the year of her life on the personal front, but 2023 is sure to be a fantastic year on the professional front . In the upcoming miniseries, Welcome to Chippendales, Nicola will play Dorothy Stratten. Aside from her acting debut, the former Bates Motel actress will also be directing Lola James, an independent drama . Recently, Nicola told Grazia how she would see her accomplishments today in terms of her ten-year-old self : “I don’t know, I just have tunnel vision.” Looking back, I guess she’d be happy, but it’s hard for me to have that perspective sometimes. I just try to work my hardest, then I try to get the next job, then I move on to the next thing..”
Jennie Ruby Jane
It’s no secret that BLACKPINK’s Jennie Ruby Jane is a star in K-pop, but she will soon make her acting debut in Sam Levinson’s new HBO drama series The Idol with Lily Rose-Depp . What an impressive first acting job, and we look forward to seeing more!
Jennie made her solo debut in November 2018 with the single “Solo”. In addition to topping the Gaon Digital Chart, the song also topped Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart.
Pom Klementieff
Having starred in two major franchises in 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and Mission:Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, you’re sure to see Pom Klementieff everywhere. We are more than thrilled to learn that she will have another massive year after her previous appearances in Avengers: Endgame, Oldboy, and Uncut Gems.
“I love working with James Gunn.” Pom recently told Collider about her favorite part of the Marvel universe as Mantis. The characters he wrote are so interesting and layered, and I get to play around with them and be weird, and I think it’s exciting to create something new.”
Storm Reid
The popular teen drama Euphoria features Storm Reid as the little sister of Zendaya’s character Rue. As evident in the upcoming thriller, Missing, she can also direct a whole movie by herself. Additionally, she will appear in the upcoming post-apocalyptic drama series The Last Of Us.
In addition to the television series When They See Us and the film The Invisible Man, Storm has also appeared in critically-acclaimed projects such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Invisible Man.
