Early Life
Tess Holliday was born in Mississippi on 5th July 1985.
Laurel, Mississippi, was the birthplace and childhood home of Holliday. Before she turned 10, Holliday claims her family moved 40 times since her mother left her father when she was a young child.
Her mother was shot twice in the head by her fiancé in June 1995, who was charged with attempted murder. While their mother was recovering, Holliday and her brother moved back to their grandparents’ house in Mississippi.
Career
The 15-year-old Holliday, who was a US size 16 (UK 18/20) and 5 feet 3 inches tall, auditioned at a plus model casting call in Atlanta, Georgia, and was told she would be lucky to land print advertisements or catalog work.
After moving to Seattle, Holliday worked as a make-up artist, hair stylist, and creative director at fashion shows for two years. When she was 20 years old, she moved back to Mississippi and gave birth to her son. After Hurricane Katrina, she returned to Seattle (where she had some pictures taken for her then boyfriend and posted them on Model Mayhem in October 2009) before moving to Los Angeles in 2010.
She gained confidence after moving to Los Angeles. As a receptionist at a Los Angeles dental office, she became a professional model in 2011. In response to Torrid’s ‘House of Dreams Model Search,’ she was accepted. After being discovered online, A&E chose her to be the face of the documentary television series Heavy. In June 2011, she became the face of the television show and was featured on national billboards and advertisements. Her work has been featured on “fatshion” blogs, she models accessories and plus-size clothing, and she auditioned for Vh1’s The Big Girls Club. Working with David LaChapelle, appearing in Vogue Italia and Nylon magazine are just some of the things she has done for Benefit Cosmetics.
