Early Life
She has two sisters, Krystal and Kim Johnson, who were born in Los Angeles, California, United States. All three sisters have been passionate about singing and songwriting since a very young age, and even formed their own group. In 1989, Kandy began singing professionally and pursued an education in music. Her parents and early life are not well known. In 1995, Kandy graduated from high school and enrolled at Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. With a degree in music and communications, she graduated in 1997.
Career
Sisters Kim, Krystal, and Kandy Johnson began singing together in church choirs before touring with gospel artists such as Andrae Crouch and Shirley Caesar. After marrying Phillip Bailey of the R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, Krystal left the group. They performed on US television shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and Ally McBeal, sang alongside Barbra Streisand, supported Erykah Badu in concert, and contributed vocals to the One World theme song. Eventually, Ronald Isley saw their talent and decided to launch their own recording career, and in 2001, the group signed with The Isley Brothers management and appeared on their albums Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003).
With Ice Cream and Love Angel, the JS duo released their own album in 2003. In the single Busted from The Isley Brothers’ album Body Kiss, they appeared. Following the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, Kandy and Kim released a song titled Free, which speaks to peace, healing, reconciliation, and love. Kandy also served as a fashion and beauty expert for Fox News in 2011. In addition to her sister Kim, Kandy is still associated with the group JS. They compose and write their own songs together.
